Get to know Spirit Family Reunion

Spirit Family Reunion is not a new band, but they're new to me, and I think they should be new to you. The Brooklyn band kicks up a dusty blend of ragged string folk that recalls Woody and Pete, nods to Dylan and The Band and casts a sidelong glance to contemporaries like the brothers Felice and Avett. Singer/guitarist Nick Panken's gravelly, nicotine-burned vocals lend these songs a patina of hard-earned wisdom which suits them perfectly. The arrangements are finished with plucked/strummed banjo, fiddle, harmony vocals and a rhythm section of upright bass, washboard, snare and a pair of bass drums. While much contemporary folk music is introspective, this is music meant to be sung along to, danced along to and shared with whoever is within earshot. I think you'll be hearing a lot more from Spirit Family Reunion.
